About the McNair Scholar Program

The Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program recognizes that the diversity of researchers is integral to scholastic excellence. It seeks to produce a new generation of scholars and researchers that will more accurately reflect the growing diversity in intellectual perspectives, life experiences, and cultures represented in Academia.

The program was named for Dr. Ronald E. McNair, the second African-American astronaut. The goal of the program is to increase the attainment of Ph.D. degrees by students from underrepresented segments of society. Please see UNCG’s McNair Scholars Program page for more information.

McNair Scholars can participate in both academic year activities and, for those selected, summer research opportunities. Both programs pay stipends to participants.

Since 1998, 99 programs throughout the nation have worked with approximately 2,500 low income, first generation students or students from groups underrepresented in graduate education. Each of the McNair Programs encourages and prepares students for doctoral study and careers in college teaching and research.

As a result of participating in the McNair Program, Scholars gain demonstrable skills, acquire valuable knowledge about graduate education and how to access it, and increase their chances of applying for and being successful in doctoral study. In addition, McNair Scholars will become familiar with the research environment of a major university and establish a supportive network of professionals and peers.

The McNair Scholars Program is funded by the United States Department of Education through a TRIO grant.
